Oldboy

2003.

Oh Daesu is a sloppy drunk – a careless man who does little for anyone but himself. One night he disappears. He awakes imprisoned in what has all the appearance of a hotel room. He is imprisoned – for 15 years and is never told why. It’s a revenge story for the books. After Oh Daesu is mysteriously released, his life becomes that of hunting down those that imprisoned him and making them pay at any and all costs. Starring Min-sik Choi, Oldboy has a desperate and palpably raw appeal.

Oldboy is one of the more disturbing and intelligent films I have ever seen. Directed by Chan-wook Park, Oldboy was released in Korea in 2003 as the 2nd installment of the Vengeance Trilogy.

The movie stands on its own, however, and if you haven’t seen it – make it a point to do so. Understanding that this recommendation may come detrimental to your sanity should not disparage the suggestion of a good film. It’s enough waves in the film world to get the attention of Steven Spielberg who is slated to make an American version of this film starring Will Smith that’s due out in 2012.

Great flick!! Definitely a “sleeper” that hasn’t gotten enough exposure.
